3G Handset 356.  Most likely some type of data access.

Can you tell us more? Where did you see this in your account?

I'd like to know the same thing. Just noticed this on my online account

$1.99 MB 3G TELÉF. 356 PREPAGADO

03/05/2010 9:06 PM PAYGO $1.99MB 3G HNDST356

1.4 MB

03/09/2010 9:37 PM PAYGO $1.99MB 3G HNDST356

0.26 MB

What is this? I don't use my phone except for texting and the occassional phone call.

PAYGO $1.99MB 3G HNDST356 means that you were accessing either Get it now or Mobile web from your 3G handset.

Did Verizon make it so you HAVE to get a data plan with the ENV3 now? If so what happens to the people that bought one before this became the policy? are they being cherged without warning?

They are not adding this charge to current customers...but when you upgrade your phone or change plans you're done. And dont let anyone tell you that you NEED this data plan to make your phone work. That is a 100% lie, and I have two "multimedia" phones in my hand with data blocked to prove it.

You CAN fight this though. I had a conversation with a rep who called me direct after I entered poor results on a phone survey and he said Tech Support has the option to remove it. I will soon find out if he was telling the truth, but he promised the notes were documented in my account. If it fails, and my bill goes up yet again, I will be moving to Sprint to get more bang for the same high buck.

I agree. I recently went in to upgrade my phone, and take off the data plan which for me is a luxury but not needed and I'm trying to lower my bills. As I looked at a phone that appealed to me the rep told me I had to get a data plan with that one. As I looked at him dumb-founded he proceeded to walk me over to the non data plan section. Basically the teen phone area. Apparently to Verizon we are either business people with need for emails and web, or teens. Nothing in between.

Sprint came to mind at that moment too as I walked out of the store.

So I just got this new phone and I'm playing with it to see what all is what.  So you are telling me that when I clicked on that to see what it was I was charged?   Twice it was by accident, can I remove this from my phone? I have the motorola rival.

Re: data charges pvas you go

Yes, any time you transmit data you are charged, and your total usage is rounded up to the nearest MB, so if you use 5KB of data, you will be charged $1.99 for 1MB of data.  Simply accidentally clicking on the "Get it Now" or "Mobile Web" functions, no matter how quickly you cancel, will incur this data charge.

As far as I know, you cannot remove these features from your phone, but you can make them more difficult or impossible to access.

Option #1: Go into your phone settings and change your shortcut keys to access something that won't cause you to use data, my favorites are the calculator and alarm clock functions.

Option #2: Log into MyVerizon and block Mobile Web, Ring Tone, Game Ring-back downloads, etc.  (This is best used with the above suggestion, because I think you will still have access to browse those catalogs even if you can't download them, and browsing does use data).

Option #3: Call Verizon and ask for a Nationwide Access Block on your account.  This will also prevent you from recieving or sending picture or video messages, but it will completely prevent you from using any feature that will cause a data charge.

OR, if you don't like my variety of free options, you can go for the Verizon solution.

Give Verizon $9.99 extra each month for 25MB of data, thus preventing accidental $1.99 charges on your bill.

Since you are using the Rival, you are lucky to have this choice!
