Using mobile e-mail with basic calling plan to pick up e-mails while on the road

Here’s my situation – I am using a Verizon Wireless G'zOne Type-V on an AMERICA'S CHOICE II 450 ANY UNLIM N&W UNLIM IN CALLING plan. Text messages are billed on a per message bassis.  Right now, it’s an adequate combination for my needs – I don’t spend much time on the phone, have little need for texting, and love the phone. It's nice that it’s the least expensive plan. 

However, I will be on the road for three weeks this summer and stops at internet cafes and hotel business centers will be infrequent.  I’d love to be able to at least see my incoming e-mails as to know if I need to take care of an issue promptly rather than find out about it a few days later when I log in via computer.   

Could I simply add mobile e-mail to my plan (I’d need to upgrade my phone) and have the ability to read incoming e-mails and peck out basic responses?  I’m trying to keep costs to a minimum and really don’t need more than very basic e-mail access. 

I’d appreciate any recommendations you can provide.
