THE DATA PLAN SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED BECAUSE THE G PHONES THAT HAVE A REQUIRED DATA PLAN NOW FOR EXAMPLE THE BLACKBERRY STORM DID NOT NEED IT BEFORE SO WHY DOES IT NEED IT NOW SOME PEOPLE JUST WANT TO TALK AND TEXT. WE HAVE LAPTOPS AND IPODS TO DO ALL THE INTERNET STUFF SO THE DATA PLAN SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED. AS YOU CAN SEE I AM VERY UPSET.

A lot of other people are also very upset about the mandatory data plans.  You should definitely contact Verizon Wireless via phone and e-mail, send letters to their executive director, and check out Facebook (try "Say No to Mandatory Data" as a search) to find other people who feel the same way.

Data plans on smartphones have been in force for quite a while.  If you don't want a data plan then don't buy a data mandatory phone.

Search the subject of your post, and you will find plenty of previous posts regarding the same complaint.

I definitely agree. I'm about to buy the enV Touch and that is required.

My friend however has called VZW and bought / used a phone without the Data Plan.

I would give them a call.

Honestly, I don't care how long this has been going on for and it has only been since January. Also, those phones never needed a data plan so why have one now. Its people like you that deal with Verizon's crap but I'm not. I could use the internet on my laptop don't need it on my phone. Data plans are more for business people. Nobody wants to pay $90 a month. Plus Verizon looks **bleep** because TMobile has talk, text and internet for $50 and Sprint has all of that for $70 so what do you think now?

I agree the 9.99 data package should be optional.  I have been with Verizon for years and now an considering switching.  Apparently I have been lied to.  I was told in the store I could get the HEX number and call and it the number was prior to mandatory data package ruling I could get by without purchasing it.  Well today I was told that is incorrect I cannot get around the data package in any way.  I do not want or feel I should be forced to pay for this package.  All I want is a phone with a full keyboard (that isn't a slider phone, hate them) so I can text.  I was also told the 9.99 charge was because of all the accidental 1.99 data charges.  I told that customer rep I shouldn't have to pay for other peoples mistakes.  I was smart enough to block those apps on all my lines.  I feel Verizon is raping their customers for more money!

Here's an idea.  Offer a better phone for people who don't need internet.  One with a full screen/touch screen, better than 1.3 camera, sizeable keyboard for those of us with big thumbs and mp3 capability.  Is this not possible?   The best phone available right now without the data plan falls far short of this.  Or is it really that you want people to have to pay the data fees to get the phone they want whether they need internet or not?  I'd pay more money upfront for a better phone if it were available.

I think that you have the right to change to one of those inferior carriers if you choose to.  The reason their plans are so cheap is because that is the ONLY way they can get customers and they still have higher churn than the big 2.  I don't take Verizon's crap, in fact, I use what I consider to be their superior network and service.   If you think Verizon looks *bleep* because of the second rate carriers price plans, then please feel free to switch to them.

So once they offer one with all your requirements but the camera is only a 2.0MP you"ll be complaining about not having a 3.2MP and then once one of those shows up you'll want the 4MP that the new 3GMM phones have right?

Bottom line is that no matter what they do, somebody will be on here complaining about lack of choice.

Actually, the phone that met your needs was the Motorola Rival.  It had a 2.0Mp camera, MP3 media player and could hold a 16GB micro SD card.  Would I be right in assuming you find something about that phone unacceptable?
