I have unlimited text in the US, but I need to contact a friend who lives in Japan. Would it cost me extra to send texts in Japan if I'm doing the texting in the US? Thank a lot!

Yes it would cost extra to text outside the country (and to receive a text too). You'll be billed for international text messaging.
