No, the messages though Im are considered a text. So if you have unlimited you are 100% covered. :smileyhappy:

Correct. Only the initial download will cost MBs. Logging in/out, updating your buddy list and sending messages will not use MBs.

So I don't need unlimited data? I don't know if I have that or not. I really don't want to get charged =P.

So, how come nobody can explain to me when I do send/recieve a message in mobile IM the data icons show activity, AND where are the text data from the mobile IM session showing up on my text details?

Well just because you see the little data icon show up on your phone doesn't necessarily mean you're getting billed for MBs. You may also see the icon show up when you get a MMS message or when connecting to Backup Assistant, but you're not charged MBs for any of those items either.

As far as it showing up in your text details, it should show up as some sort of short code. Not the loggin in/out or refreshing, but the actual messaging part should in theory show up as a short code. I haven't used Verizon's mobile IM service in a while so I can't say for sure.

I guess i should have stated that it does NOT show on my text data details what so ever. All i see is data icons active throughout any message send/recieve sessions and start up of mobile IM. Also, as tar as text goes, it uses the 1X side to send and recieve messages. IF mobile IM used text like everyone is claiming, why dosent my EV/1X icon turn to only 1X, like when I send a text message? ( see pix ) Nobody can answer that i bet.

What I am trying to say here is that what it states on the IM page for VZW does not corrispond to actually what is really happening on users phones. I really wish they would clear this up. There was a post somewhere on here where a VZW CS rep told somone that he WAS being charged for data and they did.
http://support.vzw.com/faqs/Get%20It%20Now/faq_mobileim.html

The following is ripped directly from the above link

Is there a subscription charge for Mobile Instant Messaging?

No.
Instant Messages sent and received, User requests to refresh the
Contact List, and Service Requests (Add Contact, Block Contact,
etc.)are billed as TXT messages according to your pricing plan or TXT
bundle. Verizon Wireless highly recommends TXT bundles or price plans
with unlimited text messaging for Mobile IM users.

How do I know when I'm sending a Text Message?

Whenever you trigger an action that sends a message, the handset will display the message "Sending" or "Sending Request."

Now, I NEVER see sending or sending request on my phone in ANY IM session. ALL I see is DATA icons active. I NEVER see any text data from an IM session on my text details, so how is it using text then?

As far as PIX/FLIX messages go, it uses the EV side of the network to send/recieve messages thats why the data icon is active, just like in IM sessions.

Like I said I haven't used their Mobile IM service in while, so I wasn't sure if it did in fact show up in text detail. It was just a theory. :smileytongue:

Are past being concerned about getting charged at this point? Because you shouldn't worry about that.

But I agree, there is a glaring inconsistancy on a lot of the FAQ pages and support pages directly provided by VZW. The sad and unfortunate thing is this is not just unique to Verizon Wirless, or the wireless industry in general. I think it's just the fact that big business suffer from so many policy changes, corporate hogwash and all around double-talk that's it can be difficult for them to keep their facts straight. But I digress, that's a different topic (and perhaps different forum) altogether.

When sending/receiving messags thru Mobile IM it's not necessary for only the 1X to appear as regular text messages do. The application is utilizing the EVDO connection for that particular session. No one ever said text messages couldn't be sent over EVDO. So yes MMS, Mobile IM..even VZ Nav will all use the EVDO connections for their respective sessions, but this doesn't mean you're actually getting billed for MBs.

Come to think, maybe because Mobile IM uses EVDO is why any of the messaging doesn't show up in your text details. Quirky indeed.
