LG Dare and AIM - Can I close the screen

If I log onto AIM on my LG Dare and then close the IM screen am I still logged on.  Will I still receive IM's?

I don't want to have to leave the screen opened to stay online and for others to see me as "available" on their buddy list.

Yes you would still be logged in. You need to physically actually log off yourself.
