Whether M2M texting is free depends on your texting plan (or lack of one).  With no texting package, calling plan only, ALL texts are charged.

With the $5, 250 text plan, ALL texts count towards the allowance, regardless of carrier.  M2M count as part of the 250.

$10/mo gives you 500 texts to/from any carrier PLUS unlimited texts M2M

$20/mo gives you 5000 texts to/from any carrier PLUS unlimited M2M

Only if you have unlimited does it not matter what carrier you are texting to/from....so in some cases it is helpful to know how many of your texts are M2M and how many are out of network - a plan change could make a difference in your bill depending on who you text and what your patterns are.
