Ok, long hold press, info icon top right, go to GP and do the uninstall and the open. Works

I just did this and it worked fine, all previous text messages came back with pictures and all. Moto z3 with Android 9.

Not sure what GP is...my only option is to uninstall the app... not the app updates as it does not give me that option

GP stands for Google Play, It's in among other things an app store
If you go and you search for message plus it will come up. When you click uninstall it will then give you the option of uninstalling updates, not out uninstalling the whole thing.
If you do this it should be all right. No I did not lose my messages
I hit uninstall, it gave me the option to uninstall updates which I did and then lo and behold message plus was working again
