Data Charges for Downloading Ringtone!?! Please help me out!
lovehopefaith94

Heres my problem:

I have nationwide basic which is 450 minutes and no texting plan at all. I found a website called Phonezoo(free ringtone generator) then I created 2 ringtones from 2 songs off a CD that I bought. I sent them to my phone, recieved them on my samsung juke as a text + saved them as ringtone then I checked my data usage and it went from 1.5MB to 13.5MB in a matter of 15 minutes! It costs me 1.99 per mb recieved.

I am so sick and tired of these "hidden charges" every month I've been 40$ over my initial cost.

I'm only 15 and my dad is threatening to take my phone away because of these unknown "data charges". I'm not texting that much anymore(maybe 2 txts per month), I dont use IM feature and I have no idea why I'm getting charged from 20$ - 40$  extra in addition to my 40$ initial cost monthly.

If anybody can relate, would you mind sharing what you did to figure out whats going on with the data usage or whatever, I'm assuming its data charges.

Thanks!

Hi!   I hear ya.   Actually though, there is no such thing as "unknown" data charges.   Believe me every data item charged has a reason behind it and you just have to find out what is causing those charges.   Verizon should be able to explain every single charge so that you'll know exactly what that data use is and how it's happening.   Once you know you just might want to adjust your plan to maybe cover those charges and ultimately lower that bill.   I think dad is probably more upset that bill is always more than it should be and he's thinking you're doing something on purpose to make that happen.   Once you can get Verizon to identify what is causing that overage . . . then ask them if there is a better plan that can cover whatever that overage is at a lower cost.   Dad will be happy again when he see's a bill that is "consistent" so he can plan for it  :smileyhappy:

I have a 15 year old also and I agree .. according to our lovely contracts -- there is no such thing as a hidden charge. However, you are still a victom of clever billing. I suggest your dad call verizon and talk it out with them. I strongly suggest he invest in the $5.00 parental control option! He can block you from over texting and going over on minutes and it's only an extra $5.00. I suggest they add a Data control to stop downloads or add some into a plan. I didn't see a plan that allows a specific downloan amount at a low cost. Technology can be confusing.

My daughter did the same thing. Someone sent her free ringtones to use on her phone and she paid me to let her download some. When I got the bill -- I was charged what it said the ringtone would cost -- plus what verizon charges to download it. Double Wammy. I wanted to get mad at her. I am about over texting but I didn't understand the download of ringtones either and I approved her to download them as long as she paid me upfront. I didn't know I would get billed for the download on top of just buying a ringtone. So -- It's my fault too.

It's a learning process... just talk about it all with your dad and try to understand the bill as much as you can. Also thank your dad for allowing you to get the phone. He's putting a lot of faith in you!!!

Cmon guys.. cant you be logical? They are not trying to make money of off you... just get it over with and get a plan that includes the features you want. Another think is stop using data..comon sense would tell us that IF you DO NOT have a data plan/feature you WILL get charge data no matter if it lasted 5 seconds to 5 minutes.

Whoa!  Slow your roll down there junior . . . the OP is merely asking for an accounting of his data charges.  He and every other member has an absolute right to a full acounting of charges.    He nor the rest of us are trying to get something for nothing here.   Every subscriber is entitled to a full acounting of precisely what their data charges are.   Nobody said a word about not wanting to pay for something they ordered or anything of that nature.   He needs a full accounting of his charges so that he can know if he needs a different plan.
