I have been a VZW customer for many years, I currently have an LG VX8700. I have had no realy problems with sending or receiving text messages of any kind, from anyone. There are the occasional one here or there that falls by the wayside...but here is my current issue.
A friend recently signed up with Alltel. I can send her any kind of message and she receives it just fine. She texts me, and it never comes through, although on her end it appears to have been sent. She has a Blackberry. If she sends SMS it never arrives at all. If she sends MMS, the subject comes through but the body of the message is junk such as:
Content-Type: text/plain; name-file.plain
I had her try my sending to my husband's phone, he is also VZW. It never came through. She knows no one else on Verizon to try.
We each called our providers, who both said it was the other end's problem.
I had another friend on Alltel text me and I got it fine.
Any idea what might be going on and how we might fix it? Support has been useless.

She can text to other carriers with no problems. It just seems to be Verizon. We both live in the same state, and Verizon insists there are no problems or outages between us. I'll have her try email and see how that does. Also I'm going to her place next week, so we'll try it then, when we're in the same location. I'll ask her to try sending to herself also. At this point I'm wiling to try anything to get it working - she's the person I would text the most.
Do we know if the Alltel customers will be considered 'IN' after the merger?

Can YOU text fine between VZW and VZW? Also, if that works then I would see if she can find another VZW customer to text to verify this. Sometime I think tech support are a bunch of boneheads. It is clear to me ( and I work in the technical support field ) that a problem does exist. I will tell you if it keeps happening to keep a details of all the troubleshooting you did. Speak to a supervisor if necessary and tell them to check MARS and you want it escalated to the Bureau of Network Repair. There is no reason this problem should be existing.

Yes, I can text between VZW and VZW with no problems. She tried both my number as well as my husband's - neither worked.
I had her send a text to my number@vtext.com and I got it - the "from" area said SRS0=FBYB3f=DB= *then her email addy* . But just straight texting...no.
I asked for a supervisor the second time I called support, the girl got very nasty with me and insisted her supervisor was at lunch, took my information and said I'd get a call back in 24-48 hours - never happened.
I will call again and ask them to check what you suggested. I appreciate your help.
