Is the message about my cloud closing soon legitimate?

I received the following text message  "FREE VZW MESSAGE: Reminder, your Verizon Cloud Account will close on June 29 and all content will be lost.  To preserve memories go.vzw.com/activatecloud"

Is this a scam or do I really need to activate a new cloud account?

We do recommend you Back up content, set up automatic back up reminders or upgrade to premium storage to avoid the account being closed. What kind of phone do you have? If on Apple, you are likely using the iCloud and not the VZW cloud and so this would be why your account is inactive and set to delete..... Just a thought...
