if you set the phone down it should go into "doze" & stop many functions....have you disabled doze for certain apps?

You have wake locks which prevents doze from happening, and even stops the phone from idling.

Even something as simple as a call in an app could wake up various apps and not close properly. There was a long discussion about it on Android Development channel. I don't remember the link and too lazy to go looking for sorry 😞

Find your wake locks. Use something like wake lock detector or similar apps to watch what is keeping the wake lock. Make sure you watch it a couple of days not a few hours.

That would certainly be an unusual situation. Just to confirm, was the device charging when you were asleep?
