WiFi Calling--Can you force the S6 to use WiFi Calling

So it appears wifi calling can only be used if there is no service from the cellular network. I was excited for wifi calling because the service at my house is marginal. I can always make a call outbound but my phone does not ring about half the time when people call and alot of time I just have a voicemail and the phone never rang.

Is there a way to force my phone to use wifi calling?

I would like it to use wifi while at home so I do not miss any incoming calls.

I know I can buy a network extender buy did not really want to spend $250.

Thanks for any feedback.

I know how important it is to have reliable service, Alan76! In the US the services default to the cellular network. Your observation is correct in that it will occur when there is no cellular coverage.

I have the same issue.  You CAN force wifi calling by turning on airplane mode (which turns off all cellular and radios) and then turning Wifi back on.  It's a pain because you need to remember when you come home and again when you leave.  It would be much easier if Verizon would add either a higher threshold for cell service quality to switch to wifi calling OR gave us a setting to default to wifi if available, but at this time you need to punch a bunch of toggles.  Once you do, it works great. Another workaround would be if Google allowed tasker or trigger or llama apps to automate the toggle cellular or airplane modes without rooting to get around their lock, but as of 5.1.1 this is not possible either.  Bother.  It's better than nothing, just not as good or easy as it should be.

If you're an Android user, this is such an insanely useless feature... up until recently, I was using an Apple iPhone 6. The Verizon service at my house is so completely terrible that I was never able to make or receive calls at my house until Verizon introduced the WiFi calling feature. On my iPhone, it was a godsend! My cell service is generally limited to ONE bar on either the 3G or 1X (whatever that is) network when I'm at home. Once WiFi calling was introduced, my iPhone would immediately switch over to that as soon as I walked in my door. Overnight, it became possible for me to use my Verizon phone to make and receive calls at home (imagine that!!). However, when I switched to a Galaxy S7 Edge, this option completely went away... now, it never switches over to WiFi calling, even though my cell service is so bad that it drops any call I make or receive almost instantly. I guess just being connected to the worst possible level of service is enough to prevent it from happening over WiFi. This would be fine if Apple users weren't treated the same way... c'mon, Verizon, you're better than that!

Well it seems there was a way to 'force' wi-fi calling by enabling Airplane Mode, then turning on Wi-fi and as a previous poster mentioned, 'it works great'.  It did for me for past couple of months I had my Galaxy J3 V (a real cheapie). But tonight I tried forcing wi-fi calling using the airplane mode trick, and when I placed the call, I got a message I never got before:  Unable to make calls in Airplane Mode. To allow calls, Airplane Mode will be turned off.  Cancel    OK

So now there is no way to force wi-fi calling. Verizon fixed this loophole, or is wi-calling problematic today?

If that is the case, then Verizon needs to offer a customer option to enable this feature should he wish it for whatever reason.  I checked and wi-fi calling WAS enabled.

I would appreciate verification on another android phone that this loop hole has indeed been plugged in Verizon's interest.

dimap52-

Wifi calling is such an amazing feature. I definitely want to make sure that you are able to use this feature without any concerns if that is the route that you would like to make your call. When you put the phone in airplane mode, you did mention that Wifi calling was enabled, but when you put the phone in airplane mode it automatically disables Wifi. Was the Wifi re-enabled?

I have a LG G4 and can not force phone to use Wi-Fi calls if there is any signal available.  Tried Airplane mode and then turn on Wi-FI signal, but phone gives the message about can not make calls in AirPlane mode.

Would be really nice if user could pick signal strength threshold to switch to WiFi calling.  ie..  2 out of 5 bars, use WiFi instead of cellular network.

WILCLE3,

We want to make sure you get the best possible service wherever you are. I certainly am sorry to hear that you have trouble using wi-fi calling. We want to keep you connected. The cellular network is the default but things should hand over to wi-fi if the signal stops being available. What trouble are you having with calls when connected to wi-fi?

Yes, the iPhone certainly seems to handle the switch to wifi calling and back to cellular calling in a much more useful way. On the iPhone, it just works.

Update:  After help from tech support I was able to get Wi-Fi calling working.  The issue was I was not waiting long enough.  Seems to take about 10 minutes on wi-fi at my office for it to activate and there is no icon showing that I'm now using Wi-Fi calling.  But it does work successfully now.
