Okay - I just moved to Colombia, and after doing all the proper steps with Verizon to ensure my phone could be used internationally, they assured me it was global ready! I am now in Colombia, and have bought a local SIM card (which is a VERY common practice in order for you to pay a more reasonable local rate for voice and data). I have installed my SIM card, but my data doesn't work - lo and behold, after an online search I discover that this is in fact a problem with the Samsung Galaxy S3. HOW COULD IT BE THAT I HAVE PURCHASED A GLOBAL PHONE BUT CANNOT GET DATA TO WORK WITH AN INTERNATIONAL SIM CARD?!?!
Can someone please help me understand whether this is still an issue, and if so whether there is a solution or workaround? I am absolutely handicapped in this country without data service. If Verizon has in fact sold me a global phone that is not global, I am going to escalate this.

Verizon sold you a global phone that doesn't allow custom APNs to be configured, which is why data doesn't work. As far as I'm aware, the only "fix" for the S3 is to void the warranty, but we can't help you with that here.

CORRECTION: as of the first update AFTER the Jelly Bean update, it looks like you can configure custom APNs now.

Let us know here if you are actually able to get data on your S3 with the update and changing your APN settings... would like to know myself!

Has this worked for anyone? I took my S3 overseas and the APN was still grayed out. I posted an inquiry on whether any Verizon smart phones are working reliably with local Sim cards WITH DATA, not just voice.

really hope someone out there can answer this. all the discussions i can find are pre-4.3 update. i'm taking a trip in may, and need to decide on renting a "dumb" handset and using voice, or just ordering a sim card for my gs3 and skyping
