I think I figured it out. You need to go to your manage applications section of the phone. to get there, pull down the task bar at the top of the page.
go to settings. this is the little gear wheel icon..
You have options at the top of your screen: connections, my device, accounts, more. Choose "more"
Select Application Manager
you can scroll to the right for different categories: download, SD card, running, all
Select All
scroll down to Samsung Music and open.
You have an option to turn it off.
turn it off
all done.

nd4eva, glad to hear that you successfully downloaded the latest software update to your device. You can tap and drag the music icon to the trash can. However, you will be unable to permanently remove that widget from your device as it has been embedded by the manufacturer. For more device support, click http://bit.ly/y5iuoj

I touched and held the widget on the Lock screen many times, but it did not respond like other widgets normally do. Well I played a lot with Lock screen and other settings, and it appears to have gone .

I can't remove samsung music player from lock screen either. The trash can DOES NOT appear when you hold your finger on the widget. This is the dumbest thing I've seen. I paid for the phone AND I'm paying a monthly service fee. I decide what I want on my phone. This is B.S.

Samsung\Verizon decides what is on your phone, actually. Once you actually finish paying for your phone after the 2 year contract, (rooting discussion removed)
All we can do as users is turn off or disable the bloatware for now.

I hear you. I have had nothing but problems with my phone after the update. Wifi problems are killing my battery and making my data usage skyrocket, the music issues are driving me insane. Now my music player is skipping songs randomly. I want to throw the dang thing across the room all the time now! Doing a reset made no difference in performance, having no apps on it made no difference. I'm baffled how they can have good hardware and then completely destroy it with the software. I can't wait to be done with my contract and go back to an iphone. Worst decision ever getting this stupid thing. My three year old 4s was more stable and could at least do the basic functions I needed!

New updates that get installed on top of another update can sometimes cause chaos the only way to combat them is by running a System Cache Followed by a Factory Reset or run 2 Reset's right behind one another what happens,
It may sound lame doing this but sometimes is the only way to straiten out the phone.. you give the suggestion a try..
