My Galaxy III just started overheating and shutting down with no apps running

My Galaxy III just started overheating and shutting down within minutes. Even with no apps running. The only way to keep it running is to put in the fridge or on my cold glass desk. The heat source seems to be from the battery area of the phone. I am concerned about the phone overheating and cracking my screen.

Is this sort of behavior covered under my warranty?

Yes, as long as there is no damage to the device.

Have you tried removing the battery and a reboot?  May save you from having to go the warranty route if the heating problem goes away.  You can also try a cache clear and a factory reset if you are so inclined.

Many times. the only to get it to start up again is to remove the battery once it crashes.

Try a factory reset, but back everything up first, rr

This certainly would be covered under warranty as long as there is no physical damage or moisture damage to the phone,Coolassmike . You should take the phone along with any charging accessories to your local store http://bit.ly/3SdsA to have them evaluate it. Getting that hot to the touch where it needs to be cooled in a fridge is not normal at all. That also isn't recommended.

I was having the same issue too.  I have brought my phone in to the Verizon store and the manager there figured out the reason why.  I went out of town recently and after that my phone have been overheating and hot all the time and my battery will run out with no reasons and no apps running.  I found out that when you go out of town and there is no Verizon's tower the network on your phone automatically switched to to "Global" which will work overtime and extra hard to get service that makes your phone overheat.  The manager told me that the phone is not smart enough to switch the network back to LTE when you return back home.  To check your settings if it is in the correct network.  Go to Settings > More settings > Moblie Network > Network mode > make sure the LTE>CDMA is selected.

Once I changed this, the phone never overheat or anything.

Hope this helps.
