I just got a new Galaxy S5, and everything was great fro a short time. Now, once the phone goes into 3G mode due to coverage, it won;t go back to 4G unless I turn it off and turn it back on. Then it's OK until I enter another 3G (or less) zone. Stumped!?!?

My S4 does the same thing since the KK update. I did a reboot of the phone to get the 4G back but the next time it goes the 3G it does not go back to 4G. This issue I have noticed about 4 times now since the KK update. If this is like everything else with KK it won't get fixed.

Protector85 no worries, we'll make sure everything is crystal clear! KK stands for the system update Kit Kat. Have you recently completed the software update? Please remove/insert the sim card to reset the connection.

Thank you for the suggestion which I just completed. I am not going anywhere for a few days to test my phone. I seldom lose 4G here at my home unless the F/O link between the serving tower and VZW gets interrupted which has happened a couple of times since VZW has added 4G service to my community in rural NM. There is no redundancy to the connection so when it happens we are usually out a minimum of 10 to 48 hours. I will be going over to TX in a few days and I will go to 3G or 1X many times in the 5.5 hour trip. VZW does have the best phone service in the area and 4G to boot which is much better than most of the crummy DSL's the land line phone company provides here. Don't even think of a cable connection as it is much worse than the land line telco.

As the VZW tech support person said Kit Kat which was the latest update for the S4. The S5 came with Kit Kat installed and may have received a subsequent update on that, not sure. Since you just purchased your S5 I would imagine it completed the update very quickly after it was activated but you can check to see in the settings if your S5 is up to date.Check in the settings of your phone - "More" - "About Phone" or "Software Update". Good Luck, I hope this Sim Card remove/re-install works to repair your phone.

you'll never see 4g driving cross country, only bigger metro areas.

Not true in areas where I live because I can get 4G in many rural areas around here in NM and TX. Some areas of the old Altel which they sold to others VZW had to do things somewhat differently and I don't live in a metro area of NM a very small rural mountain town and I have solid 4G here at my house and most anyplace I drive in town. I can drive from here to the next town east of here and stop about 1/2 way and have 4G. You can find it is somewhat spotty but you can also find the 1X and 3G just a spotty.

my comment was only to this part of your statement:
"I will be going over to TX in a few days and I will go to 3G or 1X many times in the 5.5 hour trip".

i'm betting you're in the fringe & pretty close to a bigger metro area.
