Not sure what battery life issues with other vendors versions of this handset have to do with anything...
Pretty much all these carriers modify the software that goes on these phones making each carriers GS4 a different animal. That's WHY we have carrier-specific updates like the NG6 update.
This is about a very specific VERIZON issue. ONE carrier pushed out a specific update designed for the software version installed ONLY on their version of the GS4 that appears to have immediately resulted in a number of users with no previous battery life issues to suddenly have pretty severe changes in battery life. I don't think it is unreasonable for people to start with the entity that actually issued the CARRIER-SPECIFIC update when seeking assistance on this. It is entirely possible that the code responsible for the issue is in some of the Verizon bloat-ware and has zero to do with Google or Samsung.

deloused,
The NG6 update is Android 4.4.4. It's the version causing all the problems with the S4.

I thought I would provide an update after going through the various suggestions provided in this post.
Things have not improved in the least and may have gotten worse. Today, after unplugging at 7:15 a.m. by battery is now at 45% at 9:40 a.m. So, I can probably now expect to have 4 hours of battery life per full charge.
Has anyone gotten any positive response from Verizon expect a suggestion of doing FDRs until the phone fixes itself or replacement of their phone with a refub? Any monetary restitution?

Everyone needs to go into their Settings Menu and select Software Update, there has been a fix released by Verizon that you will need to download. This doesn't take too long and it is especially for those who have had power cycling issues and VPN connection issues.
One step closer to Lollipop!
VRUFNK1 is the update. You can also download it via Samsung Kies if you plug it into your computer.

I guess it's possible the runaway battery consumption issues and the power cycle issues could have a common root cause. I guess I'll install it. Can't make it any worse, right? (Did I just say that?)

Thanks Joonhyuk for the post. My phone didn't tell me there was an update, but when I checked via settings it picked it up OTA. Install was very quick. Here's hoping the issue is fixed. Just yesterday after at least a week of no issues, my phone, sitting on my desk all afternoon, gave me the low battery beep. It was 15% and hot to the touch. I didn't know it because it was sitting next to me all day while I worked.
Fingers crossed. Agree with szurlo that it would be hard to get much worse.

Let us know if it worked. I'm not going to trust any more updates unless I
know for sure it has resolved an issue. Of course that's when they don't
FORCE it on us like the last one!

Does this fix the battery drain issue? I have not had any issues with power
cycling nor was I aware anyone else was. The issue we are discussing here
is the rapid battery drain since the last update.

They don't mention it. Following is the entirety of the release notes:
• Fixed VPN connectivity issue
• Fixed the intermittent power cycle issue
I wasn't experiencing the power cycle issue either. I don't use the VPN so I can't speak to that.

How is it possible that Verizon has released a new update and are don' said any announce and say what is fixing. Apparently Verizon don't care his customer.
