Phone number port question

I'm heavily considering a pre-paid plan.  I know most, if not all, the pre-paid plans will port my number from verizon.  If i want to come back to a post-paid plan with verizon, does verizon guarantee they will port the number back? (assuming of course I keep up with my pre-paid plan payments and don't let it expire etc. etc...)

II misunderstood the first part, I thought you were going from a Verizon prepaid to a Verizon Contract. Before you cancel the prepaid service you must sign up with whatever Contract Company first so they can port your cell number over, once that is done your prepaid cell will be deactived.  Every company might have different times that you can go from a contract to a prepaid. If you sign a one year contract you will not beable to leave that contract until the one year is up. As long as you keep your cell number active whether its with Verizon or anyother company you can port that number back, just remember you always have to active the new cell service so you can port over the same number. Once a cell is deactived it will not beable to be ported over.  I hope this makes sense, if not write back and I will try to help you further.

If your porting your phone over at the same time your canceling your contract yes you will beable to port your same number over, when you switch from a prepaid and want to go back to a contract phone you must have had your prepaid phone for 6 months before you can port it back over to a contract phone.  When you so transfer a prepaid to a contract phone any money on the prepaid will be added to the contract phone as a credit on your bill.

So, to be clear, First I must have the pre-paid plan active for 6 months.  Secondly, and I'm trying to understand the right order here... While the pre-paid is active after the 6 months, I then come back to a verizon contract?  Because if I end my service with the prepaid, then go to a verizon store and try to come back my number will have fallen into purgatory right?
