Can Verizon access my old phone number?

Can Verizon get access to an old phone number of mine?

I had two step verification enabled for an account, and I cannot change the phone number for two step verification without getting a code sent to my old phone number which I no longer have access to.

This is extremely frustrating and the company doesn’t seem to be helping, so I’m not sure if I called Verizon if they could access that number by any chance and get the code for me.
