If you are an infrequent user for needing a hotspot, then the phone hotspot might be sufficient.
Reasons for a separate device.
There would be less drain on the phone's battery by using a dedicated hotspot device.
The signal detection might be stronger, but that is speculation on my part.
You might be able to connect more devices to a dedicated hotspot device. I know the phones are limited in the number of devices that can connect to it.
