Yes it can happen if you are on the border of Canada, I live by Niagara Falls NY and it has happened to people.   Never had it happen to me and now we have unlimited which includes unlimited calling and texting in Canada since we were going over a lot before the border closure.  When we had travel pass we were only charged the $5 on the days we used it.  So if we used it 1 day it was $5 for the 24hrs unless they changed something.  Then if you used it again after that let's say 2 days later was another $5 for 24hrs of use.

Awesome that you chimed in!  Can you clarify for the previous poster that you are connecting at times to NON US, NON Verizon towers, which is why you get charged for roaming.  And that GPS location services have nothing to do with tower connection.

No expert but I think being close to the border you could possibly connect to Canadian towers and it's roaming unless you have the travel pass or an unlimited plan that includes Canada.  People have complained about this before because they don't understand.

Before we had the unlimited plan I used to put my phone in airplane mode before going over to Canada so at least I could use wifi over there.  If your phone is not in airplane mode you will most definitely get a warning text message on the phone connecting to the Canadian towers about being in Canada and roaming and rates and stuff.  Correct me if I am wrong but her son should have got the warning text if he was connecting to Canadian towers right?

I did not think travel passes was automatic?  I stopped into verizon store to ask about it once before we were on one of the unlimited plans.  They activated it for me and explained it.  My thinking was in case we broke down in Canada I wouldn't be worried about big charges using the phone.  If I used it once to call AAA would be $5 only on the days I used it.  Then several months later when I saw the unlimited plans included unlimited calling and texting in Canada and would be a better deal for us switched.

You should be lucky the travel pass kicked in and you were only charged $5.  Could have been much more roaming charges.
