Hold Power and Volume down for 10-20 seconds. That should simulate a battery pull and close open apps so that reboot starts fresh.

I have tried this repeatedly. It effectively turns the phone off. When I attempt to turn it back on, it vibrates once for 1 second makesbthe "log on" tones, screen remains blank. It does that repeatedly until I turn it off using the method you describe...

Thanks for this tip - this worked for my Samsung Galaxy 9+ this morning when the display screen was blank and nothing would show when attempting to do a normal restart using the Power button.
