Will Droid Bionic be able to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich when available?

I am about to purchase Droid Bionic but have a concern I won't be able to upgrade when the anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich OS becomes available.  Does anyone have any feedback on this?

I'm pretty certain that it will, since it's been so recently released...

However, based on my experience with the Bionic (and I do think it's a great phone, but there are a few substantial issues with it that make me offer this suggestion), I highly, highly  suggest that you wait a few weeks until the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is released. It will come with Ice Cream Sandwich, and according to the reliable sources, a pure Android interface...No Touchwiz or Verizon dallyings with the software.

Google and Samsung are set to make a Big Announcement this evening and it's supposed to be about this phone, so we will actually learn tonight just what it will be, but all bets are on 4G, pure Android, and ICS.

I'm awaiting my 3rd Bionic to arrive this afternoon via Fedex. Activation issues, connection issues, call issues (mostly with the 2nd one) and, not surprisingly, battery life have made me gun-shy of this phone. Yesterday, I took the second one in for the call isues and they discovered an incorrect setting of some sort on my line. They corrected it, and when they made a test call, they looked at me funny and said "the earpiece on this phone is broken". Which I knew all too well, but since I use a headset, I wasn't too worried about that. The local Verizon guys take really good care of me, and they wouldn't have me leave the store to live with the bad earpiece, so they ordered another one without even asking me...:smileyvery-happy:

And I so hope and pray that I don't have the same issues with the 3rd one that I have with the first one (activation issues, data connections, which is now being said that the Verizon network is partly to blame, but I can't verify that. and call issues) and the second one (all of the above, plus substantially less battery life and the aformentioned bad earpiece.

I will be looking really hard at the Galaxy Nexus and if it's relatively smooth sailing (and what phone is these days, in all fairness), I will get one.

And if the Bionic's issues are resolved with the rumored forthcoming update, all the better....

I really dont get why the first thing that comes to a users mind on buying a new device is the next OS release...  I agree with gerio that the Bionic most likely get the ICS update but from what I have seen and heard about the device, the Bionic isnt all it was made out to be...

The thing that gets me that they redesigned the device and stripped out all the hardward that made the device special..

Seeing as just today Motorola has announced a phone that is exactly the same as the Bionic except significantly thinner and with a better screen, i would say NOOOOOOOOO do NOT buy this phone.

Also, tonight Samsung is announcing a new Verizon phone as well. so us Bionic owners got screwed.

Did someone put a gun to your head or forced you in any way to buy this phone?

the reason why I say that is because every few months a newer, faster, more attractive device will hit the market, making the best out there today look like rubbish.

This is the nature of computers in the past, and now the smartphones of today.

To be fair, I was going to buy the Bionic, but a financial squeeze when it was released caused me to pause my purchase. With the announcement today of the Razr, I am currently not quite out of the squeeze, but I am looking towards the Razr in the near future, depending on release date. I will also be considering the new Nexus. I have not seen the specs on the Nexus yet.

I was checking out Motorola's website, and there is no cardock available for the Droid Razr at this time. If they do not have a car dock for it, it is a deal breaker. The same thing with the Nexus... no car dock, no deal. I use the GPS too much not to have it.

According to a Google rep Google is "Currently in the process for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for Nexus S. Theoretically should work for any 2.3 device."

Who knows how long it will take Moto and Verizon to get around to realeasing an update for the Bionic though. I remember waiting forever for Froyo for my OG Droid.

I was tempted to get a Bionic but now that the Nexus has been unveiled I'm glad I waited.

I agree with curtterp. If you wait to buy, you will never buy. New technology is released at a pace too fast for most to keep up with. If the time is right, and you have a need.... buy it (whatever "it" is that fits your need). Then, make the best of your purchase. I'm happy with my bionic. Zero complaints. Yes I hope I get ICS, but if not, my needs are met and I'm happier with my bionic than I was with my original droid (after 2years).

google wil provide the code to motorola

it will be up to motorola to adapt it to the bionic

then they send it to vzw

who puts all thier bloat in

its easier to put it on the nexus s, no bloat, and its made to run vanilla android

Chef, I really long to walk even a few feet in your shoes when it comes to my Bionic.

I was in the Verizon store this morning on another matter and they asked about my Bionic, which is number 3 and I just got it yesterday. So far good, but I the coming days will tell the tale. They mentioned that a memo just came down to not exchange Bionics anymore because of connectivity issues, that a "network upgrade" was coming very soon that would resolve all of those issues.

As always, we shall see...

I just saw a post from Moto's facebook and they said we would get ICS on the Bionic. No time frame yet.
