Well, almost....
No problem getting the calender into Google Calendar. Didn't try notes yet....
However, it won't sync with my version of Outlook. Outlook 2002 as updated on the fly, somehow, a couple years ago.
And I can't find a link to tell the phone about this stuff, although I may be surprised if I actually look in the phone ....
Any ideas?

The phone seems to work well, too, so far. About my only other criticism is that the USB cord is too short, and I need another one.... The phone "lives" in a bedroom, and has to sync down in the office. I prefer to charge it while I'm sleeping....
Guess I can get one of those....

Unfortunately it does not look like Google Calendar is compatible with Outlook 2002.
Compatibility
Currently, Google Calendar Sync is only compatible with Microsoft Outlook versions 2003, 2007, 2010 32-bit and operating systems Windows XP and Windows Vista.
Windows XP 64-bit Edition is not compatible with Google Calendar Sync at this time.

I happen to be using Outlook 2003, and the syn works great with Google Calendar. I hope that there is some kind of solution for you.

Google Calendar sync works on my Windows 7 64bit system just fine (operates in 32bit mode) and works very well.....

I missed the "2003" when I read that article the other day....
I can live with Backup Assistant and Google's calendar, although I'm kinda used to Outlook's single-point interface. Not the end of the world....
(I thought I'd updated to Outlook 2003 somewhere along the line, btw....)
The only thing left is Notes....
I was surprised - who knows what's out there - not to find an app for tying the Droid solidly to Outlook - it's pretty much an industry standard. Kinda "what were they thinking?".... After all, it's not an iPhone ....
I still prefer a "contact" screen, too - I like to use a stylus v.s. just my pudgy fingertips. But, overall, it ain't bad. I had a Blackberry Storm for a couple days two years ago and returned it. I never could get used to the screen. The Samsung Omnia is a much better, IMHO, phone, but demands a stylus. The OS is such that one can assume the designers never actually used it, either, but that's another story.

Now the Google Calendar sync is only for the Outlook Calendar. There are other sync options if you are looking to sync the other parts of Outlook.
For business's using Exchange, there is a product out there called Touchdown. It works very well and uses OWA to sync (if the company allows it). I have been playing with it for my email at work, and have not had a problem with it.

All I really need to get sync'd is Notes - between the PC and the Droid, somehow, and the initial "conversion" is done. But then I need to mirror the phone on the PC, etc.

Guess the point is that I'm used to Outlook, and while I'd switch to something else, it doesn't seem that the Droid supports anything except contacts and the calendar, by separate means. Whole lot more painful than just plugging in the sync cord....
One-time transfer is a good starting point, of course, but....
Meantime, I just found out that the browser doesn't support Java. I use GoToMyPC a LOT, and it requires it.... Again, nothing I couldn't live without, but also yet another "what were they thinking?"....
One problem with zillions of apps is that finding them gets interesting....
I can write PC-based stuff to handle Outlook's CSVs, and may end up having to do that if I can find a WP of some kind to handle the notes. Swapping in and out of Google's Calendar and Backup Assistant is going to be a bit of fun, though.

Log into My Verizon, and then go to contacts. You want to view the contacts, then find/click 'Select All' , then after all contacts are selected, look for the gear just to the right. Click on the gear, and there will be a menu with Export Contacts. This will export contacts into a CSV file that you choose.
I searched the Market for gotomypc, and found PhonemyPC. It has its own client for the PC (which they claim is free) and the Android app is $9.99. The comments are mostly positive,with a few bad comments thrown in. Just a thought here. I do understand about the java not working frustration. I wonder if you have tried the Dolphin or Opera Mini browsers that you can get from the Market? I don't know if that will work for you or not, just a thought.
and I do understand why you do not want to use Exchange..... if my workplace didn't have it, I wouldn't be using it
