Can we get some sort of answer from a Verizon employee?
We have no one shutting this rumor down and there are thousands of people out there wondering. Why can't we get an answer?

Rumors are just that, rumors.
Verizon (or any other carrier) are not going to "commit" to a release date of anything until they are absolutely 100% positive they can deliver it on that date.
There is a lot of whining going on, based simply on rumors and speculation. Imagine the amount of whining and crying that would be going on if a company like Verizon were to commit to a specific date, then find that there is a problem with the update, some bug that was discovered at the last minute, so they decided NOT to push the update on the "confirmed release date"?
By making it absolute company policy NOT to even comment on rumors, it keeps them safe from future cases of "Well, they never 'denied' the rumor so it must be true, now why haven't they released the update yet!?!?!" accusations.
This is a very good move on their part, although I also know your frustrations. I had a Samsung Moment that I returned to Sprint, because it had an incredible number of "I can not live with it" bugs. Had I known *when* an update was coming, I might have "toughed it out" (Then again, looking at when an update *was* finally released, I would have dumped it anyway in that case)

There is supposed to be an OTA going out right now. It is a minor system upgrade. The internal testing of the Droid's 2.1 is done so it shouldn't be much longer but there are system restrictions. the minor OTA is going to take a good week or so to roll out. Then I am sure the Droid Roll out will be first just because the Eris update will be more complicated however, it will be a more important one so it might be that the Eris update rolls out first. It could be a while. I am sure they won't just keep the system rolling updates out constantly for the next month or so. Poor computer will get tired. LOL.

So far as I've been able to see the update going out is a minor patch that brings everyone to the same 2.0.1 level. As to why the patch would be needed - is anybodies guess...
