Your not set up correctly

Here are the instructions from the website located here

the information from the webpage that pertains to outgoing mail is:

Enter the following Outgoing information:

  • Server Name: mobile.charter.net
  • Port: 587
  • Security Type: SSL

NOTE: The device may ask to sign-in to send messages. Select “Require sign-in” to perform this step automatically.

  •  Incoming Server-
    Android IMAP Settings
    mobile.charter.net port 99
  • Outgoing Server-
    Android SMTP Settings
    mobile.charter.net port 587
For additional information please see Charter Email Support.

I checked with the Motorola Email listings, and I notice two different settings for Charter.

The IMAP4 settings are:

Incoming     mobile.charter.net   port 993    yes    yes

Outgoing     mobile.charter.net   port 587    yes     yes

Their POP3 settings are:

Incoming     mail.charterinternet.com   port 110    no   no

Outgoing     smtp.charterinternet.com  port  25     no   no

Have no idea why Charter would have two different setups. They are the only ones that do.

Motorola's site is outdated a little. My first post in this thread has a link to Charter mobile setup which contains the most current information.

Charter's site also states that selecting POP3 will prevent emails from being downloaded to the phone.

The differences between POP3 and IMAP4 are:

POP3 - download and delete messages from the email server. There is a setting to not delete messages after downloadng, but its been a while since I looked at my Droid X in this mode to check this out.

IMAP4 - Sync message headers, and giving you the option to download the message if you want to read it. This method reduces the amount of data flowing through the network, since it only downloads message headers, and allowing downloading of the whole message if the user wants to read the message. IMAP4 is actually good for smartphones because the network traffic is reduced for things you do not want to look at (like spam... all you see is the message header)

The url of this page is here - http://www.myaccount.charter.com/customers/support.aspx?supportarticleid=2234#android

it also contains the setup for Blackberry, iPhone, and Windows Mobile. There is no reference to the setting of charterinternet.com anywhere on the page, so I think that is the part that is outdated.

Yes I do have Charter as my ISP, and no I do not use my Droid X for checking my home email. I get a lot so spam at my email address, and not enough emails that are so important that I have to know when they come in when I am at work. If I know that I am going to get something that I need to know about, I run through the setup for Charter, takes me less than 3 minutes to setup for IMAP4, and after a couple of  days of too many notices on my phone at work, I remove the account from the phone.
