I just bought the Motorola Droid this week. I was advised that the 2.1 OS was to be released but i am unable to find it. Does anyone no when this release will come out? kinda disappoint because i was missed advised
The software was ready to be deployed to a certain amount of users. Once that happened they stated that they would release the update in increments of 250,000 per day.Rumor has it that they stopped releasing the update, but I don't have any verification if that is true. Based on the statement above you should be receiving it shortly unless they have pushed it back.
I bought my droid 10 days ago. I'm hoping the incredible comes out in the next week or so. I have 3 weeks left of my trial period and plan on returning it. I love the droid for all the cool toys it comes with, but using it as a phone seems prehistoric. people constantly complain about the the call quality, and it always does weird things while on the phone. simply not acceptable, not at all!
I also have the Motorola Droid and wow way out of this world ........... I also heard that the 2.1 release is coming out two days ago....................... So what the deal Verizon is it coming out or not........ Are you going to have allot disappointed customers and loose their business forever................ So what the plan ???

Don't hold your breath on this one. Verizon won't upgrade the Droid to 2.1 because the Nexus one is too close to coming out.
With the same os on both phones the droid is basically an uglier version of the nexus one. They need to give the new phone an advantage so it will sell. So it looks like they are going to keep the 2.0.1 version on the droid. Which is sad I have seen the 2.1 os "hacked" on the Droid and it runs real well. If you look it up you can do it your self but if you mess up and brick your phone you are stuck with a paper weight. Verizon will not honor the warranty if you change your os.

You think you were missadvised checkout the other thread on here that has the title android 2.1 that guy was really fed a line.
Actually, Verizon has no incentive to withold the 2.1 update due to the Nexus One's release. Other than new customers, Verizon has nothing to "gain" financially from the Nexus One's release, as the Nexus One will be sold *only* through Google. It is not going to increase foot traffic into the Verizon stores, if anything it is going to decrease traffic where they can sell additional accessories to customer's purchasing new phones. (Batteries, docking stations, bluetooth headsets, chargers etc.)
There is not, as of yet, even any confirmation that Verizon and Google have reached a subsidizing agreement for the Nexus One, and the only way to purchase the phone *might* be full-retail (probably $530 like the GSM version). Look on Google's site, there is no subsidizing/upgrade/new customer incentive for the newly released AT&T/Rogers version of the GSM Nexus One. So far, the only company that has a subsidizing agreement with Google on the purchase of the Nexus One is T-Mobile, and oddly enough T-Moble with their "Even More Plus" plan is the only phone company where customer's can actually take a financial advantage to purchasing their phone out-right and getting a monthly discount on their bill by *not* having the carrier subsidize their phone purchase...
I'm not saying that Verizon is NOT going to subsidize the phone, and they probably will do it, but I have seen nothing in the way of concrete announcements, only speculation.
Stating that Verizon is withholding the 2.1 update because of the Nexus One is just silly. A full ROM upgrade is a big chunk of data, likely close to 100MB if the custom ROM's floating around are any indication. It is prbably the largest update push that Verizon has so far attempted, and it needs to go to a LOT more customers than any Palm update has gone out to yet.
There is also the fact that there are widely varied users with an almost infitie possible combination of applications on their phones, and Verizon/Motorola are going to want to make sure that as many of those pre-existing apps still work after the upgrade. Go check the forums for the "custom" ROM's each and every one of those that are based on Android 2.1 require you to do a full factory reset of the phone, re-install and setup all of your applications again.
Verizon is NOT going to want to confuse or peev 1.2 million customers who's applications suddenly all dissappeared from their phones. Producing a 2.1 ROM that can be flashed over the existing 2.0.1 and keep the tens of thousands of possible app combinations intact and working is a lot more difficult and requires a lot more careful planning than producing a ROM that requires you to reset your phone back to factory defaults where every phone is exactly the same again.

If so then there is a benefit in not releasing 2.1 first quarter 2010 like promised. But even at that the gains that come with the nexus one make is a superior product over the Motto or Eris. Based on this information there would be an incentive to come out with various entry devices. One could be free, the other could be around $99 and the last the Nexus one could bet it's normal price or something close to it.
