Strange .. I tested the link out last night after I posted it and it worked. But I'm experiencing the same problem as well. Anyway, here is the content of what the link is supposed to point to:

First of all I want to state that my Froyo upgrade went flawlessly. My phone works fine in every respect  with the exception of how 2.2 handles POP email accounts. I want to make 2 points about the 2.2 update and how it handles POP email accounts: First, I really don't think these Verizon techs are even aware of how 2.1 handled POP email accounts so when they see how 2.2 handles them they think there is no problem because in their minds the behavior seems reasonable. Lastly, and this has appeared in other threads on this subject, Verizon has confirmed that the way 2.2 handles POP email accounts is by design and is NOT a bug although many of us, including myself, feel this design is a step backwards and an update to return to 2.1 POP functionality is warranted. I use Outlook as my email client. When Outlook connects to my POP email servers it downloads all emails to a local store (.pst file) on my computer. What I choose to do with the original copies of the emails residing on the server will have no effect and should not have any effect on the copies of the emails saved in my local store. If I configure Outlook to delete the email on the server after it is downloaded the copy still exists in my local store. That is, the state of the POP server (from a content point of view) is NOTmirrored in my local store which is exactly what  I want and expect. Prior to the 2.2 update, this was how 2.1 handled POP email accounts. The 2.2 update causes email content on the phone to "mirror" the content on the server; as long as an email resides on the server it will remain on the phone; if an email is deleted from the server it will also get deleted from the phone the next time the email sync's with the server. This is not the behavior that we want or expected to have after the update. This behavior was not listed in the documented feature list of 2.2 although we are being told this was by design. This "behavior" is very easy to replicate. All Verizon needs is a DINC still running 2.1 and a DINC running 2.2. The difference between how POP email accounts are handled between the 2 versions will be obvious if they just try it out. So our message to Verizon is simple; give us a patch that will restore POP email support in 2.2 to the 2.1 functionality OR restore POP support in 2.2 to the 2.1 functionality BUT add an additiional "setting" that will give you the current 2.2 functionality for those who want that sort of behavior. This way everyone is happy (I think). I would think this would be a relatively simple thing to fix. The problem is getting Verizon to acknowledge the the change in functionality between 2.1 and 2.2 and I think that will only happen if enough people complain about it.

Wow, my old account username now works.  Something must have been up with the forums yesterday.

In any case, thank you so much for that explanation.  I had stumbled upon your post independent of this thread, not realizing it was yours.  If what you are saying is true, this is the deal breaker for me when it comes to Android.  I would strongly consider moving to an iPhone if/when that becomes available.  Inasmuch as I was loving the talking Navigation, the open source architecture, etc., I know Apple would never do anything like this.  They are too "anal" to allow such a drastic change.  What I don't understand is why they changed this.  Blackberries do not do this, nor do any of the smart phones I have ever owned.  This is just terrible!

The irony is, that if you delete all the e-mails from your Inbox, before the phone refreshes, they will of course end up in the TRASH folder and sure enough will stay there for as long as you don't empty the TRASH folder!!

I thought I'd provide a little balance to this topic.  I just upgraded to a Droid Incredible yesterday after having a Blackberry for 2 years.  I can understand how the way v2.2 is handling POP mail now could be an issue with someone who has had this phone for a while.  However, for me, I've pretty much only had experience with v2.2, because shortly after I got the phone, it upgraded itself to v2.2.

The one thing I hated about the Blackberry was having to delete the e-mails from my phone because I didn't want to store them on my phone.  The POP account that I read on my phone is one of 2 e-mail accounts I use.  I use the other account for placing Internet orders, entering contests, etc., messages that I really don't want to see on my phone.  The account that is accessed by the phone is my personal e-mail with messages I want to read the minute they come in.  My e-mail client on my home computer is set to automatically download messages on the secondary account.  I manually download messages for the account that also goes to the phone.  It is nice to read messages when they come in on the phone.  When I use my home computer, I download the messages, so I have a copy of everything that came in.  But it is so nice to not have to go back and delete anything from the phone.  I know that any messages on the phone have not been saved on my home computer yet.

It would be nice to have the option to choose the old way or the new way.  Maybe in the next upgrade?

The issue I have is they are being deleted off the server (with that option not checked) so they never make it to my computer. And yesterday, I opened an email account on the phone and all but the 1st email disappeared before my eyes, never to be found anywhere.

This is normal behavior of a pop3 email client from my standpoint.

The same thing happened on my Omnia. What I did to stop the emails from deleting was to stop Outlook from downloading my emails.

I use my phone as primary for my email, in the event that I need my PC to access my email then I use the web interface.

This type of mobile email behavior is not practical for many like myself who travel.

I too had a Blackberry device, and email is one of the prime reasons I have a smart phone.  I am a busy physician who travels a lot and sometimes I want to keep a copy of my email in my inbox so I can refer to my airline and hotel confirmation numbers.  In other cases, I receive emails that I don't have the time to thoroughly read; I peruse them to see who the sender is, and expect to read it later (ON MY PHONE).  Now, they simply disappear.

The justification that emails will simply end up on the PC anyways is unacceptable to me.  It presupposes that the PC is more important than the mobile device when it comes to email.  This is something Microsoft would do--change software, because IT knows better what the consumer wants even if such an upgrade is a step backward for many of its users.

Let the user decide, which device he/she wants the email to be saved on.  If auto-delete is truly an upgrade, then offer this as an option, NOT the default behavior.

budone; Have you by any chance also added the same POP3 e-mail account to Gmail? If so, it could be that when Gmail syncs with your POP3 account (which could be pretty much at the same time as your phone), it deletes the e-mails from your server before they even make it to your home computer.

If this is the case, in Gmail POP3 account setup, there is a box to check to leave e-mails on the server. Just a thought.

They pushed the 2.2 upgrade onto my phone on Friday, Sept 3, 2010. As far as I am concerned it is a disaster. Besides all the other issues such as useless apps that keep starting in the background there is a much bigger problem which I think is delibrate.

Android 2.2 does not save previous e-mails from pop-server on the phone memory or the SD card and just deletes them everytime it refreshes once the server is empty. This is what happens:

HTC mail syncs with your pop e-mail account and downloads the mails. Once you are on your home computer and start outlook and download e-mails which as default deletes e-mails from the server. As soon as the e-mail server is empty, next time HTC mail refreshes it just syncs with an empty server and thus deletes all previous e-mails from the phone. One way to stop this is to change the outlook setting so it leaves a copy of each e-mail on the server. But everyone has limited server memory and sooner or later it will be full and you will have to empty it which means your phone mails will eventually be deleted too.

Another option is to automatically send your pop e-mails to Gmail in order to keep a copy of them on your phone. This has a problem that Gmail mails are only saved on Gmail server, so If I am in a place with no phone service, I have no access to my e-mails on Gmail in case I would like to refer to any of them.

Neither are real solutions. Spoke with HTC about this and was told that is a new feature with the upgraded OS. It is ridiculous to call this a feature, it is a fault. It sounds like they added this “FEATURE” to force everyone to use Gmail as their primary e-mail. That just does not sound right to me. As a consumer, I bought this phone and the service knowing that it has features that everyone accepts as normal and fundamental to the Smart Phone. Now Google, HTC & Verizon have decided that I should NOT keep a copy of MY e-mails on MY phone! I find this absolutely absurd.

I told the HTC technical support person, had I known they were planning to do this, I would not have bought this phone 2 months agao and may well have considered changing from Verizon to AT&T to get the iphone. If they don’t fix this soon, I will seriously consider getting an iphone even before my 2 year contract is up. I have a family plan with 4 phones on my account.

Had a new upgrade pushed on to my phone today and it seems to have fixed the pop3 e-mail problem. All of my e-mails are staying on the phone even though they are not on the server anymore. I have also noticed that the battery life may be a little better. I will still have to confirm that in a few days and after more usage.

I actually liked the old way of email keeping up with what was on the server. I download all of my email to Outlook so if my phone has an email, I know that it is a new email that I need to look at. Do you know if there is something I could do to go back to the old way before the lastest update that was sent this month? I thought that the "delete mail on server" option in the settings would help but it doesn't. Verizon told me that the phone keeps a digital copy on the phone when I tried to address this to go back to the old way of handling email. Thank you for any help you could give me.
