DIY Netbook on 3G -- allowed?

Forgive me if this was asked before (and point me to the apropriate thread)...  I did a quick search and didn't see anything.

If I have my own netbook (an Aspire One), can I purchase my own pci-e wireless card (not a USB stick), based on the supported list located here:

http://vzam.net/download/supported.aspx

...install it, and walk into a Verizon store front and get hooked up on a stand-alone data plan? can they just use the ECN off the card? do I need a SIM card? or does it have to be a Verizon-purchased netbook?

If so, any gotcha's?

If you purchase a used VZW device you can get it activated with no contract. You will have to pay a $35 activation fee. You can choose between the $39.99/250MB plan or $59.99/5GB.

You'll provide them with the ESN number of the device. There is no SIM card.
