Why is there a little analog clock which appears when I start the phone or change applications - like it's busy doing something and 'can't come to the phone right now.' How can I make it go away?

I believe you are talking about the small clock that appears when your processor is busy. It is similar to the hourglass icon that appears on your computer when it is busy processing. Sometimes a battery pull will reboot your device and the little clock icon will not appear much.
