Will my curve 8330 work in Ireland?  If not, can I rent one?

You would need a phone that is a World phone like the Tour.  Your 8330 will not work.  However, I do not know about renting a phone.

When i went out of the U.S., the guy at the Verizon store told me to get a prepaid Verizon phone. Just activate that and put money on it.Use it to call back to the U.S.

Wow, total mind blank on my part.  Never even equated "rent a phone" to the prepaid phones.
