In my gym, where I have no Verizon connection, I can connect easily to WIFI. The problem is that once I do that I have no idea how to surf the web using the WIFI instead defaulting to the non-existant Verizon service.

After you turn on your Wi-Fi, you must connect your device to the router. After connected, you should be able to browse the internet the same way as if you were using your standard connection. Hope this helps!

I have been unable to fully connect the Bold 9650 via WiFi.  I attempted to connect to my home wireless network which has WPA security.  The connection seemed fine, as the Home Screen of the BB had my network name and the Wi-Fi icon. Also, a check on the phone status indicated an IP address.  However, the Home Screen Wi-Fi icon was the “gray” not the “white” icon.  This gray icon, according to the phone manual, indicates:

“Your smartphone is connected to a Wi-Fi network but does not have access to Blackberry services over the Wi-Fi connection”

Also, checking “Manage Connections”  Wi-Fi is on, but there is no green check-mark.

So, what do I have to do to make Wi-Fi work?  Is there some restriction?  At the time of this test, my home network was working fine with good internet connectivity.  One final check, while the BB indicated an IP address, it did not show a DNS address.

Hi, all,

Just got my Bold 9650 yesterday and here's what I have learned so far about the WiFi.  First, I have found it easy to go to Manage Connections and turn off the Mobile Network and then configure the WiFi.  For protected routers, go to Set up Wifi connection.  Click Manually add Network.  Type the name of the unique SSID network name, remember it is case sensitive.  Next, check the type of security used.  Then, type the key for the password, as in my example, I use WEP security, so I have to type the long string of letters and numbers.  Then click connect or save to save the connection.  Then, you should be able to connect to your WiFi.  Now click to enable WiFi and you should connect.  If connecting to a hotspot with no passwords, you should just be able to scan for a network and select that public access point.  The WiFi symbol on your homescreen should now be white instead of greyed out.  I hope this helps.

Doc,

Good description of the setup process.  This is what I did for my home WiFi network and I connected locally to my router fine.  But the BB home screen icon remains the gray one with no connectivity.  A question, when you a logged on at home and you check the network status on the phone, do you have both an IP address and a DNS address?  In my case, I show an appropriate IP address, but for DNS it shows 0.0.0.0

Thanks, Jeff

Hi,

I tell you what I would do...restart your router.  Unplug the router for about 10 seconds and then allow it to restart.  Sometimes it will then recongize the new device and it will connect.  The DNS address should be set to automatic on your router, so it will have one such as 192.168.1.102.  Also, make sure your router is not set for MAC address filtering.  MAC filtering is another great way to keep snooping free-loaders from getting on your WiFi, but it can hinder you connecting.  If it is activated, just make sure you add your Bold's MAC address to your router.  That is all I can think of for now.  Hope this helps.

Always a good test to re-boot the router.  I'll try that tonight.  But, I am indeed connecting to my router.  I get the network name indicator and WiFi icon on the Blackberry home screen.  It is that I'm not connecting to the internet.  So, I'll play with it further.
