Tethering Blackberry to pc problems

We've been using my husbands Blackberry for a couple of years now to access the internet on our laptop.  The laptop died last week.  We bought a desktop and are trying to access the internet with the Blackberry.  It will connect, but no web pages will come up.  We just keep getting an internet explorer error screen.  We've called Verizon tech support a couple of times and were told that VZ access manager will not support a 64 bit system.  Huge problem since all computers for sale now are 64 bit.  We were also told, not by VZ tech support, that the Blackberry can't be tethered to a desktop--it doesn't have the capability to run a desktop.  Does anyone know if our problem is indeed that Verizon can't support a 64 bit system, or if we can't connect to a desktop and need to get a laptop instead?
