Memory Leak

I have read post from the past to know that memory leaks on the BB Storm 9530 aren't uncommon, however it seemed the solution was to upgrade the devise OS.  I am currently running v5.0.0.328 which to my knowledge should have any leaky problems.  Do I have a similar issue, do I need to get it replace, upgraded, find a lake and throw it?  I am out of solutions, I have deleted ever app from my phone among all other extras, I am down to 0.0 KB.  So I'm guessing I couldn't upgrade the OS even if I wanted to.

HELP?

Thanks,

Doug

First thing to do is see what applications are running the in background. Hold down the BlackBerry button and a small retangle box will appear showing the applications that are currently in use. Some of the apps are always running: Phone, BB Messenger (if installed), Home, Browser, and Messages. If other apps you are not using are still running, close them. See if that helps open up some memory.

Many believe just exiting an app closes it. However, if you don't close/exit from apps such as viigo or ScoreMobile your memory is going to be eaten up by them.

Also open Browser and then click options, then you will see Cache Operations, click it  and push every button in there to clear memory, one will ask for you to select delete or cancel, be sure and click delete. Then when you go to back your way out it, ( uturn button, next to red phone button) will say cleaning memory.  You can also click on options and see how much memory you have now by scrolling down to Memory and clicking it and a small scroll will show how much is there. Then in options you can scroll down to Security Options , Advanced Security, and then Memory Cleaning. Then scroll down to Certificate search ,click it and then click it and then select clean now. Then have you ever cleared phone log?  Push green phone button at bottom of phone then middle at the top of phone and look to the bottom right and there should be a big red X, keep clicking it until all calls are deleted.

Oh last thing is pull bat. and wait a few minutes and re install and then push red phone button and set aside until it all starts back up. Then push options and see how much memory you have. I got rid of Slacker radio and am only using Pandora radio as I read it was a cause of leaks.

please report back, and if this helped please give me a Kudo.

I'm not sure if it's fixed or not.  I have done all the cleaning and such as I have been told (which I had done in the past at times).  I seem to have about 38MB now.  How much application memory should I have without any applications loaded?  Also, with minimal use of the device, my available memory seems to jump around quite a bit, is this normal?

Thanks!

Memory leak on the Storm 1 (9530) has been an ongoing problem since it's inception on day one.  It has gotten better with newer OS's but it is still there.  It occurs for the most part due to themes, applications, hardware, and the OS.   I will give you an example.  On mine if I run the program Meterberry with Weatherberry installed I lose several MBs of app memory a day. However if I delete one or the other my Storm runs great and only loses .5MB or so a day. I use only Weatherberry in this case.  So the best way to run a Storm 1 is to shrink it down by uninstalling anything you don't want or need.  The Storm 2 (9550) also has issues as well.  The application memory is doubled but still leaks.

My advice to all Storm 1 owners is to use the .419 official firmware from Blackberry, wipe the phone completely before install and go easy on apps and themes.  You will see better performance and stability from your device.  There are instructions on how to do this, to avoid the TOS here I can tell you the name of the site rimes with "BLACKBERRY".

Doug, I only have about 25MB of memory open at any time with the games and apps I have. I do not like Weatherberry because it leaks memory. I use Weatherbug which you can set when open by pushing BB Button and select Preferences and scroll own to Configure how often it updates itself. When we have a lot of active weather going on I set it to 15min., normal days 4Hrs or even OFF and then you have to select it to update. I pull my bat. about once a day. I do the memory cleaning after any Browesing and the same after phone calls unless I forget which is quite often. I never have more than 3 to 4 phones numbers im my call log. If you have Slacker radio, I would delete it and get Pandora. They have no commerciaals and its totally free. I also use Berry Buzz instead of noise everytime I get emails and messages. This has to be one of the greatest apps for any BB phone.

So it sounds like my suggestions fixed you memory problem?

Will this void any Verizon warranties? I've wanted to do this to fix the screen dimming issue, but I"m worried about warranty issues.

Good question.  Some people at Verizon will tell you yes and some say no.  Maybe one of the VZW folks will chime in here and give us an answer.

My opinion is this.  The .419 OS is NOT a leak.  It is an OFFICIAL release from RIM for the 9530.  Just because Verizon chooses to sit on it  why should customers with the 9530 suffer?
