My IPhone 6S Plus showed deactivated and I had to put my Apple password back in. What does this mean?

The other morning my phone read deactivated and I had to put my Apple password in to get it to work again. Why would this happen?

It is possible that the iCloud Activation servers were having a temporary problem and caused your phone to lock up. Another alternative is your account may have been accessed by someone who proceeded to push the "Lock Device" button as if it were lost. Or you may have installed an iOS Update, with a recent iOS Update having a bug in it that caused activation lock to kick in immediately after installation.
Its hard to say what happened without some more context.
