I simply check my voicemail periodically to see what's there but I never receive notifications when I have a new voice mail. How do I remedy this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Check out the Verizon Visual Voicemail app. You may have activated that.
Pull the battery and Sim card. Also check your personal options if dialing *86 make sure notifications are turned on
Did you switch from the iPhone as your previous phone?
