I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 and my wife has a Motorola Droid Mini both with Verizon Wireless. Are either or both of these phones GSM phones? Additionally, are these phones considered to be unlocked? Thank you for any assistance.

The 4G LTE phones are unlocked from the factory. You have to check the specifications on the radios in the phone to determine what GSM frequencies each device will support.

it's advertised as gsm capable.

They are unlocked mostly to work with international SIM cards. Switching them to another carrier like AT&T may present a problem when trying to use the apps like visual voicemail.
