Texts to iPhone containing emoticons come through as empty bubbles

When sending from a galaxy s5 to an iPhone 5s, any texts with emoticons come through as empty bubbles. If you enter them like colon then parenthesis, it will auto show as a smiley face, and it will go through, but if you just choose the emoticon picture, it sends the empty bubble. What is going on?

Hello nicholasbranson!

I can clarify. The emoticons may not transfer from device to device when sending from a device with a different OS or manufacturer. However, if you just send punctuation, each device is able to translate that into the emoticon style loaded into that phone.
