When making or receiving calls or trying to use talk to text my Droid Maxx no longer hears me. It worked fine this afternoon now nothing. I tried restarting it but nothing. Any ideas?

I'm guessing it's a hardware failure.
Are you paired with any BT devices? Is the microphone hole clean of foreign objects / debris?
You could try an application like Mic Tester or something similar.
Next, you could first try booting into SAFE mode.
If that doesn't work, you could back-up your critical content and try a Factory Data Reset.
Then, it's probably time to replace it.

It is the microphone that has quit working not the speaker.

You have 2 mic input ports, bottom is for voice pickup and top is voice/noise input cancelation. Try both inputs by placing your finger over the one not being tested and placing a call or go with stef7 and use mic test app.
