I got my wife a Droid Incredible and from her perspective it's almost unusable. She was using a Samsung Impression with a slide out keyboard (which she used fairly effectively with her fingernails but which she has come to hate). It was her idea to update to an Android phone but she's gone into serious implosion mode. Her fingernails aren't that long, just the usual girly stuff, maybe 3/8 of an inch long. Swiping and dialing the phone work pretty well, but typing an SMS message or an e-mail is absolutely out of the question. Like 80% error rate or worse.
And some things on the Incredible, like entering contacts, absolutely won't allow you to use a landscape mode keyboard but instead insist that you use the portrait mode keyboard which is all shrunk up and condensed. I can pretty much use it with my non-fingernail fingers but even I fat finger half of the entries and I'm constantly correcting input. With my wife and that condensed keyboard it's a complete meltdown. Sincerely, it actually strikes me as kind of retarded to only SOMETIMES allow you to use the larger landscape keyboard, but no amount of holding the phone in landscape mode will make it change.
We do have a screen protector stuck to the screen that came with the phone from Verizon, but it is supposed to be guaranteed not to change the user interface experience, so I'm thinking that's probably not a contributing factor. But absolutely, positively the screen only responds to the touch of flesh and absolutely ignores anything from the fingernail, so my wife is completely upside down with the phone. Surely this can't be normal?
Any insights?

When my wife got her iphone she just removed her nails, and actually cut her real nails short. So far she doesn't miss her nails. lol

Also, I believe I read that the OP's wife could use Swype, ask if that is the case, is she able to text with Swype? I'm writing this post with Swype right now.

also...there are plenty of comparable devices (androids) that have slide out qwerty keyboards. if you are within 14 days of the purchase, she may want to go in and play around with an LG Ally or Moto Droid II. there's is also a moto droid that looks like a blackberry (droid world or pro??? not sure which one).

The Droid Pro looks more like a Blackberry. The Droid 2 Global looks just like the Droid 2, both of which have a slide out keyboard.

I have heard that some women with long nails curl their finger down and use the top joint of their index finger for keyboards. I have only seen it done once, and I can't say that it isn't a learned skill.
