Galaxy S5 terrible performance after system update to lollipop 5.0.
Phone overheats, battery only lasts about 3 hours, sluggish performance.

Well I'm nearly 72 hours into my S5 Lollipop upgrade, and the overheating and battery drain are still there, it just a bit better. Instead of 30% per hour, my battery is "only" losing 20% on average. Hopefully this trend continues.
It's still sluggish, however. Typing texts (in Verizon's Message+ app, FWIW) the keyboard (SwiftKey) will stop responding periodically, the phone will freeze for 5-10 seconds, then suddenly come back to life with the keyboard hidden. Tap the text area and it comes back. Maddening.

Day 4: My Galaxy S5 has continued to improve. It has periodic moments of overheating, but battery life is much improved. I went 3.5 hours today on battery, and had 64% left (although I didn't use it much at all during that time). The occasional hesitation hasn't shown up today, either.
Fingers crossed that this issue is resolving itself.

Depending on the issue it may resolve itself. Starting with Jelly Bean, the Google OS has a self optimizing feature in it and it will go through all of your pics, music, documents, data etc... and apps and optimize them to the new OS. This can take 10 minutes or it can take 5-6 days depending on how much you have on the phone. The OS will also learn your app usage and start shutting off those apps not used or will shut off randomly used apps as well. So right after the update you will have horrific battery life because everything (almost) will auto start (a feature of the OS to make sure everything is ready when you need it) Then as you go and show the OS (by regular usage) what you use all of the time, and what you do not use, the OS will start shutting down the apps that are not used giving you more life. Also something else to remember is that when a new update is pushed most people (may or may not apply to you) tend to look around a bit more then normal which will drain the battery as well.

Totally unacceptable solution.

Unfortunately, it is often necessary to backup your content, jot down important settings, and perform an FDR, specially when the OS is being updated.
SOMETIMES, this isn't necessary. But honestly, most people that have difficulty post-OS update find that an FDR gets their devices working properly.
There are some reports here where people have done FDRs and their devices are still mis-behaving. That can happen too.
No one is going to tell you: Here's your new OS update, and oh BTW, you have to do an FDR. But if you are having difficulties, then you get the sober suggestion that it might be your only viable option. If your device is in a bad-way now, a patch might not completely rectify a situation. You may have to perform an FDR for the patch to work properly.
At least attempt the low-level cache clear. That has worked for some.

As Lollipop appears to be working fine on the S5 with Sprint that my coworker owns, I must politely disagree and state that VZW's addition of bloatware has most likely caused the issues.

Not necessarily as I have family members with S5's on Verizon that upgraded to Lollipop without problems.

Do you happen to have Facebook/Facebook messenger apps installed? If so try removing them temporarily and see if it solves any issues, both on other sites and here removing those applications has solved many peoples problems. It is an easy test and you can access facebook via web browser in the mean time. I personally ran into the same problem on an older Android phone when it upgraded to a newer Android OS.
