Just ran into this little piece of information on the Verizon website. After the hassle I went through of getting my phone activated ( bought from Moto) I wish Verizon would fix their website before some other guy goes through what I went through!
Verizon only openly supports the phones bought through them. And since Verizon only sells the 32GB in blue that is the only one they openly support.

On a different note, if this is the case why doesn't my Nexus 6 show up in my account instead of a non vzw device?

Because, as you said, you bought it directly from Motorola.

But is should still be supported. I even have the Verizon version of 5.1 on the phone! I mean look at their own picture above!

I have to ask your definition of "supported"?
it will work great on Verizon network, once you get activation done.
updates must come straight from Motorola as you have no Verizon apps cluttering your phone.
since it wasn't purchased from Verizon, it isn't covered under warranty and will be listed as a non Verizon device.
