I've wiped the cache, I've removed the battery several times, and I've done 2 factory resets and the ONLY thing that changed is that my phone is no longer running hot and going into cool-down mode.  The battery still drains faster than I've ever seen a battery drain, the lag time on the screen is awful. At first I wished I'd never upgraded....now I'm wishing I'd never switched from Sprint.  They may have had a crappy network, but their customer service was better.

If you have Facebook/Facebook messenger installed try removing them, they have been known to have problems with S5 and Lollipop.  Also try turning off google location reporting and location history just to see if they might be causing any issues.  Both ways I have personally had to deal with battery issues on an S4 when the OS was updated and apps hadn't caught up yet.

There is no change with or without Facebook/Facebook Messenger.  Regardless, my phone worked fine with Facebook and Facebook Messenger installed prior to the update so it should work just fine after, even though it doesn't.  Two battery monitors installed both show that the majority of my battery usage is the Android System and Kernel (Android OS)...It was that way before the reset and after.  I've killed all the apps throughout the day when the phone is not in use and it still makes no difference. I was told by Verizon there would be an update available on 3/16 that should fix some of the problems, but so far there isn't one...though I have to say, I'm scared to see what that one will do to my phone.

Welcome to the memory bug...  Blame all those who wanted this update now and pressured manufacturers and carriers to push out an update which Google went on record of this buy and the next update will fix it(5.1).  Everyone is going to blame Verizon, but they have been hands off anything that doesn't pertain to their network and connectivity like the rest of the world.

Whether an app works before an OS update has no relevance on its operation after said update.  The underlying OS is changing and the way an app behaves on the new OS can definitely cause problems. I personally ran into it with an old Android Motorola when its OS updated, facebook would take it down to single digits on the battery in 6 hours when before the update it was not a problem.  Others have removed facebook from S5/Lollipop and solved all their problems.  I also know that Plantronics software for their high end headsets have the same affect depending on the device and OS installed.  I have the Voyager Edge and its method of polling the phone for contacts over bluetooth will kill the phone battery in mere hours on the Galaxy S4 under 4.4.2 and 4.4.4 but it wasn't a problem under previous OS versions, so yes the OS can and will cause these types of problems especially if they are as intrusive and facebook.

my phone, which was awesome a week ago is now like my old S3 before I couldn't take it anymore.  I need my phone for work.  But with a 4 to 6 hour battery time on idle.  It's now garbage.

I understand your frustration I have been there myself before.  If you look at Settings->Battery and click on the graph is it showing the Wake bar on solid or is it only some of the time?  I know it is hard under Lollipop to see unlike KitKat.   Google keeps locking down things and making it more difficult to diagnose problems like this, it used to be you could install apps to monitor Wakelocks and now even under 4.4.4 you have to root to even do that.  What are your top consuming apps besides Android?   Also try installing GSam Battery Monitor - Android Apps on Google Play and run it for a while to see what apps it reports as top battery consumers.  It used to do a great job of wakelock reporting but thanks to Google we don't get access anymore. You can also look at the graph it provides which overlays battery with signal strength if you click on that tab or battery versus battery temp.  It also gives more info on top apps sorting by % power used, CPU minutes used or network data used.   It may give some more insight.  Unfortunately the two Lollipop in my household aren't having issues so I can't debug using them.

LMK81,  It sounds like you've taken a lot of great steps to get this working. At this point I certainly understand being concerned to still be having issues. Have you tried the phone in safe mode to see if it runs any better? http://vz.to/1Ea5XxF After the factory resets did you try the phone without reinstalling additional apps to see if it was any better?  AndrewT_VZW Follow us on Twitter @VZWSupport If my response answered your question please click the "Correct Answer" button under my response. Yes, I've tried safe mode.  I've tried running the phone with no other apps installed. It doesn't help.  My phone worked better on KitKat with ALL my apps installed than it does on Lollipop with no apps installed.  The sad truth is that I'm getting really tired of hearing Verizon tell me to run the phone in this mode, or run it in that mode and to delete these apps and try not using wifi and not use this and not use that.  I bought the phone for convenience--if I can't use the apps and have the convenience that I purchased it for, then why am I paying so much damn money every month?

The intent is to figure what is causing the problem not keep running in safe mode or not running certain apps.

It isn't a global problem, I have two S5 Lollipop phones in the house that both operate fine and my brother has one tto that is also working fine under Lollipop.
