Difference between Nexus 5 and developer edition phones

We all know that VZW will not be seeing any more Nexus phones. They want too much control over the bloatware and the updates. They simply don't care about their customers wants. They'll offer us what they feel we want and should have.

My question is how does a Nexus device differ from a developer edition phone like the HTC One, Galaxy S4 or the Moto X. I know that none of these phones are pure Android but do they have the bloat that regular phones have? Does Verizon control the updates as well or do they con directly from the manufacturer?

Verizon still controls updates on the developer edition phones.  However, the dev editions have an unlockable bootloader so you would be able to flash a ROM of your choosing on the phone.  This would obviously kill the ability for you to get updates from Verizon and would require you to manually flash updates to your ROM when a new one is released.  Hope this answers your question.
