The update was a little while ago, maybe a month or so. Been having the problem since and called the helpline. They told me to take out the battery and and then reassemble and turn back on the phone. It did not help anything. I downloaded the My Settings App that was suggested for easy access to the data on/off button, but even if it says on, I do not have the connection.
What is the procedure for the factory reset. Do my apps need to be backed up before hand?

Sorry you are having this problem. I definitely recommend backing up your applications prior to performing any reset on your device. Warning this will reset device back to original factory settings, including any downloaded applications and contact information. To complete a factory reset on your LG Vortex:
- Turn off the phone
- With the phone off, press and hold the Home key, Volume Down key and Power button.
- If home/Volume down does not work - try holding - Home key and Volume Up and Power
- When the LG logo appears, release only the Power button.
- Release the Home key and Volume Down key when the Android icon appears.
- Display will briefly show triage android screen robot and a progress bar
- Display will flash LG logo and then change to Verizon Wireless screen
- Device will power off and back on
- Once wipe is complete; device will return to initial set up screen and select desired language
Thanks again and make it a great day!

I just got my LG Vortex about 3 weeks ago and have been having ongoing problems with my network connection.
It randomly goes out, and I have to connect to my home wi-fi to get a connection. In addition I was having trouble sending messages and had to have tech support help me out. I ended up having to do a factory reset on the phone to clear that up. Then after downloading Google Voice my voice mail was doing weird stuff. The voice mail link would play my voicemail and then send a text transcription to my phone. The voicemail part was ok, but the text transcriptions were not even the same message. So I ended up taking Google voice off the phone, and so far no more voicemail problem. But still having intermittent dropping of the 3G network conncection. Today I checked with my 2 sons, their connection was ok and no problems lately either. So how do 2 phones in the same house have a 3G connection ok, but mine won't come up? Sounds more like a phone problem than a network problem to me, but Verizon keeps saying it's due to the testing and implementation of the 4G network. They told me to come back in a week if it is still doing the same thing. Wonder if they plan on discounting my bill for all the non-service I am paying for?

I have dealt with this issue several times with customers, and the common denominator was a Wi-Fi connection. If Wi-Fi is not being used, it should be turned off (unchecked in settings> wireless & networks). Once you have disabled Wi-Fi, put the phone in airplane mode for about 30 seconds and take out of airplane mode to refresh connections. If 3G is back still, perform an over-the-air program. Dial *228 Send> choose option 1. After the phone reboots, everything should be just fine.
Remember: Wi-Fi overrides our 3G network, so ensure you are enabling and disabling Wi-Fi as needed.

Yeah, I just did a factory reset yesterday, and it updated me to 2.2.2
So far today, after 2 calls to Support, i was able to get it back after doing a battry pull.
Now it's out again. This Vortex is a hand-sized piece of crap. It keeps coming and going now. UP for about a minute, down for 10. This is pure **bleep**..
I'm sure the best I'll get is someone who know considerably less than me tell me to keep doing battry pulls, and make sure I'm not running this or taht piece of software..
Since the factory reset, I've installed Google Maps, Pandora, and WeatherBug. That's it. NOPw I suppose some "genius" will try to tell me it's one of those apps causing it. All of which I used since I've had the phone, and never once has there been an issue with 3G. Since the factory reset, I've had service for about half the time..
Did Verizon hire Microsoft for the latest update? Sound like their "advanced" coding & implementation techniques (fix it as the users complain)
Until my phone works again, How about I stop paying my bil, and we get into a **bleep** contest?
