$10 monthly charge for "free tablet"

Some time ago, my daughter upgraded to an Apple iPhone 6+ here in Eugene. she was offered a "free" tablet that wouldn't change her (our) monthly bill. turns out the tablet was free - but we've been paying $10/month for it's 4G capability, which no one even old her about. I think your records might reveal that she has never, knowingly, placed a call on that tablet/phone-line.

She only uses the tablet for music in her massage practice (while on wifi) and occasionally searches the internet, again, only on wifi.

While I'm concerned that my daughter's orientation to her Elipsis 7 was less at least than satisfactory, my question is:

Can we discontinue the phone line on her tablet immediately and will the tablet still be fully functional as she continues to use it while on wifi?

Cheers,

Yes you can cancel but you will pay a $175 early termination fee (ETF) I believe because you entered into a 24-month service agreement at $10/month in consideration for the "free" tablet. Unfortunately, service reps are known to be a bit skimpy on contract details sometimes in order to clinch a sale and boost commission. As always buyer beware and do your homework research first before signing.

And yes, the tablet will function normally with the 4G service disconnected.

Orregonian, it saddens us to read of this situation. One thing we never want is to have a customer feel their loved one has been misled in any way. We do run many promotions some of which have free tablets included. Which means the cost of the tablet is free but as you know there is a charge for service. By any chance have you or your daughter been back to the store where it was purchased to speak with them about the exchange?

Hi Anthony

No she has not. She actually lives a couple of hours away. She made the purchase in question during a visit home.

We were misled with the tablet deal too, just for the sales guy to get commission. So sad that Verizon supports this behavior. I contacted corporate and they didn't want to hear it. 3 years later we are stuck paying the $10 mo they fee. So sad, Verizon.

The tablets are offered with a TWO year service contract. When the service contract expires you are free to cancel that line without any penalty

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Sorry to hear about the confusion over the tablet deal, LoracNJ. We certainly don't want there to be any confusion over this and we're happy to help. As Ann154 pointed out, tablets are sold with 2-year contracts or device payment agreements rather than 3 years and if you no longer wish to have the line, you would need to let us know that. We'd like to gather some more specific details about this however, so please check the Private Note we have sent.
