Auto racing fans love the sizzle of speed, power and reliability – whether it’s in their favorite racing cars or their smartphones. So Verizon Wireless has revved up the capacity of its wireless network at Daytona International Speedway just in time for the world-famous 500-mile race.

To further enhance the fan experience, Verizon engineers have activated the company’s latest XLTE network technology on its Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at the speedway, dramatically boosting data capacity for even more users to send photos, download content, surf the internet and use other applications at faster peak speeds than before.

The beefed up wireless infrastructure will permanently benefit fans, residents and businesses during the race and all year long, and eliminates the need to deploy temporary COWs (cell on wheels) and COLTs (cell on light trucks), which are portable cell sites sometimes sent to a big event such as the Daytona 500. The Verizon XLTE installation at Daytona provides approximately eight times the wireless capacity of a typical COW or COLT.

Verizon’s new Daytona DAS also uses advanced radio equipment that consumes much less electricity and generates very little heat, making the system much more energy-efficient.

Race fan Caleb Beachy doesn’t need to know all these technical details of the new system, but is happy that Verizon XLTE will handle his prolific trackside social media posting, web-surfing, selfie-sending and more.

“There’s nothing like Speed Week and the Daytona 500, and you’ll see thousands of people like me taking photos, sending texts, tweeting and sharing on their smartphones all race long,” he said.  “I want my wireless connection to be a winner, too, like the fastest and strongest car on the track.”
